Q. Tell us about Ebby Rane?
Ebby Rane has a simple mission and guiding philosophy: we are seeking to elevate the travel experience for women.
Q. Your journey from the legal world to the land of luxury baggage is an interesting one, how did it happen?
I had a fantastic career in the corporate world. I started as most lawyers do, paying my dues in private practice at a top law firm. When I made a move to one of Canada’s largest banks my career really began to take off. This nurtured my love of travel as I lived out of a suitcase and travelled the globe with my colleagues buying and selling businesses. It was exhilarating and my first insight into the lack of sophisticated travel accessories for businesswomen. I moved to another global bank to head the legal department for the Caribbean region and spent a significant amount of time travelling to other offices, but mostly to the UK and Asia. Like most women, I had a signature style and I wanted my personal brand to remain constant, even during business travel.
During these years, I confirmed some basic consumer insights. Firstly, luggage was largely masculine. Secondly, female luggage was typically patterned or printed or brightly coloured. Thirdly, no one seemed to be designing sophisticated luggage for the frequent traveling businesswoman. Designer brands were often not designed for commercial travel as they tended to be heavy and cumbersome. There was truly a gap in the product offerings between mass-market black luggage and brands appealing to private jet travellers. I understood the gap well because I was the consumer and so were all the friends in my network. I held a focus group in NYC with women from all areas of the corporate world, executives from insurance, accounting, media and business-owners. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive to the Ebby Rane concept. That was the turning point when I knew I needed to bring the vision to life.
Q. What inspired you to launch Ebby Rane?
I was inspired to develop the Quartermaster suitcase due to the lack of sophisticated and polished travel options for frequent travelling women. My passion to grow the business is fuelled by the incredible women I meet who travel the globe for business. We are inspired to play a role in this global travel movement. I would love to see every businesswoman with a Quartermaster. It would be like an exclusive club. With a wink, each one knows the secrets contained within the interior of the Quartermaster.
Q. How did you bring Ebby Rane to life?
Ebby Rane came to life using the best of my business expertise from the corporate world over the last 15 years. I always surrounded myself with the best teams in my corporate life, and launching Ebby Rane was no different. I am aware of my strengths and also very aware of my limitations! I have worked with an incredible team of talented individuals at every step in this journey. The experience has been fulfilling and I have an amazing network of people that I now count as friends.
Q. Where did you get the inspiration for the name Ebby Rane?
The Ebby Rane name is a tribute to my two grandfathers Ebby Salmon and Clarence Rainford. Both my grandfathers were entrepreneurs and global-minded citizens trading who diversifyed in business before these concepts were in vogue. I am most impressed by the fact that they were both community focused and always worked to build a community and not just a business. Although both my grandfathers passed away before I was born, the stories of how they ran their businesses inspire me in how I run mine.
Q. How did you launch the brand?
Ebby Rane debuted at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto as part of a selected number of designers and brands to be featured by Toronto’s Fashion Incubator. The coordinated travel accessories, buttery leather clutch and stylish Quartermaster exterior made it a unique feature and a wonderful opportunity to be noticed by style-makers and the major media. The feedback was incredible. We launched globally shortly thereafter.
Q. How can we get our hands on your fabulous cases?
Ebby Rane was launched in North America, but we moved to a global distribution model less than 45 days after launching. We immediately received a great response from women in Europe. We are so thrilled to be available in the UK and across the EU through Pinstripe & Pearls. Customers can purchase our product online and we typically ship out within 48 hours. In North America, our product ships out of our Canadian or US warehouses within 48 hours.
Q. What is so special about your cases?
The Quartermaster is the complete carry-on. We call it the complete carry-on because it anticipates every need that a woman has during travel and provides a beautifully coordinated solution. Each Quartermaster comes with 11 accessory cases and the signature 1887 Clutch in cognac leather. The real magic is in our patented packing system. We have designed an interior that optimizes your packing by providing a place for your essential items. Each Quartermaster comes with:

- Dust cover
Q. Who are your clientele?
Our clientele are confident women with a personal brand and a signature style. They are frequent travellers and global citizens. These are women who appreciate quality and craftsmanship. Above all, with time so precious, busy women appreciate beautiful items that keep her organized and in control.
Q. Getting around international hand luggage restrictions can be tricky, how does the Quartermaster fare up?
Navigating the world of commercial carry-on requirements can be a tricky! Generally speaking, for US domestic travel, 22” carry-ons are standard. For European travel, sometimes the international carry-on sized at 19” is required. The Quartermaster is 21” and is currently accepted by approximately 80% of all international carriers. Carry-ons sized at 21” are by far the most universally accepted however, it is important to always check the specifics of your carrier.
Q. What three things can you simply not live without when travelling?
My cashmere pashmina – my cashmere pashmina does triple duty for me on every trip. It is an adult blanket on the plane, a scarf with my trench coat and a shawl for evenings. I always have at least one and usually two on every trip. I probably have about 10 different colours of cashmere pashminas.
My iPad mini – my iPad is an appendix to my body! With it, I stay on top of business emails, hold video conferences, share files, watch movies, listen to music, enjoy photos of my boys, make notes, read books… I simply cannot live without it.
My 1887 Clutch – I cannot tell you how many times I was invited to dinner or to have a drink with a friend while travelling only to find myself with my utility travel tote bag or very large multi-purposed handbag. This never happens anymore because The 1887 Clutch is always in a flat pocket inside The Quartermaster so I am always ready for a night out. On a recent vacation with my family, I used my 1887 Clutch every evening for dinner… and it holds my iPad mini!
Q. Do you have any advice for entrepreneurial women who want to launch their own business?
My best advice is to do your homework, be very clear on your point of differentiation, double your estimate of the time to market and financing you require, live joyously through the highs and lows, learn everyday, seek wisdom, be giving of your time and gifts and surround yourself with great people who are experts in their fields. Also be prepared to lose some sleep and gain a few grey hairs in the process!
Q. Which is your favourite hotel in the world?
The Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts never ever lets me down. I love the comfort of walking into the Four Seasons anywhere in the world and knowing that I will be met with exceptional amenities and attentive and extraordinary customer service.
Q. What is your greatest travel luxury?
When I travel on business, my luxury is an afternoon at the spa (of course) or taking an extra day at the end of the business to enjoy the city, shop and enjoy a glass of wine with tapas at a recommended restaurant. I so rarely have the chance to relax and recharge that I love sneaking in a day after business. It usually fuels my creative juices!
Q. Where is your go to holiday destination?
Holiday destinations for my family must involve the sun. We love relaxing with sunshine, warm breezes and great restaurants. I personally love Barcelona for an energizing and creatively inspiring vacation and Costa Rica’s Four Seasons in Guanacaste is like no other. When travelling with our boys, we love taking cruises. There is something for everyone and we enjoy the evening shows, the pools and ice-skating in the middle of the Caribbean ocean.
Q. Where next for Ebby Rane?
Ebby Rane intends to continue working to enhance the travel experience for women. We want to remain focused on our niche market that has been underserved and excite them with beautiful and innovative new arrivals following The Quartermaster. So stay turned!
